Dinner ideas for a family of 4
Updated October 15, 2026
Feeding four on a weeknight has one rule: it has to be something everyone will eat, from products you can buy without thinking. These twenty dinners are grouped by what you buy, because that’s how a week actually gets shopped. Pick seven, write them on the rotation template, and repeat.
Quantities below are for two adults and two kids with normal appetites. Teenagers: add half again.
Ground beef nights (one 1 lb roll each)
Tacos
Ground beef, taco shells, taco seasoning, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream. Add a bag of tortilla chips and a jar of queso and nobody complains.
Spaghetti
Ground beef, a box of spaghetti, a jar of marinara, frozen garlic bread. The dinner every rotation starts with.
Sloppy joes
Ground beef, canned sloppy joe sauce, hamburger buns, tater tots or corn. Ten minutes.
Cheeseburgers
Ground beef, buns, sliced cheese, lettuce, tomato, frozen fries. Griddle or pan, no grill needed.
Chili
Ground beef, kidney beans, diced tomatoes, chili seasoning, shredded cheese. Doubles for lunches.
Meatloaf
Ground beef, panko, eggs, ketchup, an onion, mashed potatoes (refrigerated tray), canned carrots.

Chicken nights
Grilled chicken + rice side
Chicken breasts, a packaged rice side, canned green beans. The default "normal dinner."
Chicken strips
Chicken breasts, panko, eggs, frozen hash brown rounds, canned corn. Or frozen strips on a tired night.
BBQ chicken
Chicken breasts, barbecue sauce, boxed mac and cheese, canned corn.
Chicken quesadillas
Rotisserie chicken, flour tortillas, shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream. Uses the chicken twice: quesadillas tonight, chicken salad lunches tomorrow.
Chicken and noodles
Rotisserie chicken, egg noodles, cream of chicken soup, frozen peas. The one grandma made.
Easy nights (keep two of these in every week)
Pizza night
Two frozen pizzas, or a take-and-bake. Friday's answer.
Breakfast for dinner
Eggs, bacon, pancake mix, syrup, orange juice. Kids think it's a treat; it's the cheapest dinner on this page.
Corn dogs and fruit
Frozen corn dogs, baby carrots, grapes, apples. Nobody is proud of it; everybody eats it.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup
Bread, sliced cheese, butter, two cans of tomato soup.
Hot sandwiches
Deli ham and turkey, provolone, hoagie rolls, chips. Toast under the broiler.
Sunday dinners (a bit more, feeds Monday too)
Pot roast
Beef stew meat or a chuck roast, baby carrots, little red potatoes, onion soup mix. Slow cooker from noon.
Baked ziti
Ground beef, ziti or mostaccioli, marinara, ricotta, shredded mozzarella. Two pans: one tonight, one frozen.
Chicken fajitas
Chicken breasts or fajita strips, bell peppers, onion, fajita seasoning, flour tortillas, shredded cheese.
Shepherd's pie
Ground beef, frozen mixed vegetables, brown gravy mix, mashed potatoes, shredded cheddar.
Turning this into a week
A week for four from this page, shopped as one list:
| Night | Dinner |
|---|---|
| Mon | Tacos |
| Tue | Grilled chicken + rice |
| Wed | Spaghetti |
| Thu | Breakfast for dinner |
| Fri | Pizza night |
| Sat | Sloppy joes |
| Sun | Pot roast |
Three pounds of ground beef, one pack of chicken breasts, one roast, and pantry items. Print the rotation template and write the exact brands next to each one; that column is what keeps the wrong sour cream out of the cart.
