Cheap dinner ideas for a family
Updated October 15, 2026
Cheap family dinners aren’t about coupons or a different store. They’re about buying the same short list every week, in the sizes that cost least per serving, and never buying a product you won’t use up. A rotation does that automatically. Here’s one that feeds four on a weeknight budget, plus the habits behind it.
Prices move, so there are no dollar figures on this page. The rankings don’t change: eggs, beans, rice, pasta, chicken thighs and ground beef are the cheapest proteins and starches in any Walmart, and every dinner below is built from them.
The cheap-dinner pantry
Buy these in the largest size you’ll use before it goes stale: rice, spaghetti, elbow macaroni, canned diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, kidney and black beans, chicken broth, flour tortillas, eggs, shredded cheese, frozen mixed vegetables, pancake mix.
Meat, bought in family packs and split into bags: ground beef, chicken thighs or drumsticks, smoked sausage.
Fifteen cheap dinners
Breakfast for dinner
Eggs, pancake mix, syrup. The cheapest full dinner there is.
Chili
One pound ground beef stretched with two cans of beans and two of tomatoes. Six servings.
Goulash
Ground beef, elbow macaroni, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes. One pot, feeds five.
Baked chicken drumsticks
Cheapest chicken per person. Seasoning, frozen fries, canned green beans.
Chicken and rice
Chicken thighs, rice, broth, frozen peas and carrots.
Bean and cheese burritos
Refried beans, tortillas, shredded cheese, salsa. No meat, nobody notices.
Spaghetti
Ground beef, spaghetti, marinara. Skip the garlic bread; toast with butter does it.
Sloppy joes
Ground beef, canned sauce, buns. Half a pound of beef plus a can of lentils stretches it.
Sausage, potatoes and peppers
One pack of smoked sausage, potatoes, a bell pepper, an onion. Sheet pan.
Fried rice
Leftover rice, eggs, frozen mixed vegetables, soy sauce. Tonight's dinner from yesterday's.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup
Bread, cheese, butter, canned soup.
Taco soup
Ground beef, canned corn, black beans, tomatoes with chiles, taco seasoning, broth.
Egg and potato skillet
Potatoes, eggs, onion, shredded cheese. Dinner for under a carton of eggs.
Tuna noodle casserole
Egg noodles, canned tuna, cream of mushroom soup, frozen peas.
Hot dogs and beans
Hot dogs, canned baked beans, bread. A Saturday.

The habits that keep it cheap
- Repeat the week. Variety is what costs money: every new dinner needs products you don’t already have. A rotation of ten dinners, run in rotation, buys the same list over and over.
- Buy the exact product, once. Guessing in the store means buying the wrong size, then the right one. Save the product you actually use and buy that.
- Two no-meat nights. Breakfast for dinner and bean burritos cost a fraction of the others and nobody feels shorted.
- Pickup, not aisles. Ordering the same list for pickup removes the impulse buys that break a grocery budget. Handled. sends the week’s list to your Walmart pickup cart in one tap, from the products you saved. Join the waitlist.
